Day 6 and Day 7: The difficulty to find a shelter

We usually don't walk on Sunday but this time we had no choice has we were in the middle of nowhere. We left for the road with no breakfast, some mice had a feast on our bread that night. The wind was down and it was walking not too bad.

Along the way we realized that Google map is not very accurate when giving us the distance, we were heading to a longer walk than we expected. Hungry, tired from lack of good sleep, discouraged a little... cranky as well... we were trying to make each other laugh as much as we could. It worked until one of the tire on our wagon blew up... then we were both upset but we had no choice than to keep walking. We've made it finally to our destination after one was carrying half of the belongings om her back and the other tried to pull a wagon with a flat tire.

An amazing pastor John Keiss made our night by bringing us to Boston pizza and discussing the challenges this city have with services for the homeless. Brooks have no homeless shelter, only an emergency fund to put people in an hotel for a couple of days until they can secure a place somewhere else. This is an issue since they know a lot of the homeless of this town are couch surfing. This makes them fall into the cracks of the system, not being counted in the statistics, and making it harder to reach to them to provide the services they need.

The next morning we went to talk to Canadian tire in Brooks and met Peter the manager who made sure we received some donations for our next 4 days towards Medicine Hat. We went on to explore the town, we wanted to meet the staff at the shelter for abused women here but due to an emergency we couldn't. We walked downtown and met an extraordinary lady at the Steaming cup who provided a lunch for us. She was amazed by what we are doing and said it should more put out there how the public can help the homeless. We've met with the Bulletin News from here and then we were on our way to the motel where the Pastors Maggie and John put us for the night. We are so grateful for the room they provided us for the night, and found a garden in the motel. We've met extraordinary people in this little town, most of them wanting to help as much as possible homeless people but just don't know how due to the lack of funding received by small town in rural Alberta.

Have a good night everyone!!!!

There is so much to say since the last post was a while ago due to difficulties with my app. We've visited many little communities since...

Great to meet both you and Margo. Wishing you all the best on your journey East. Here’s hoping your knee “rests” enough to make tomorrow’s walk less uncomfortable. Sandy The Steaming Cup.
