We left Calgary pump like never before, we fell amazing and like we can conquer the world. Our goal is to walk over 30km a day and we did on our first day, even more.
Things aren't as hard as we thought but still, pain in our legs, struggling with the weight of our wagon, the traffic, the cold to name a few. Our wagon is heavy because we sold everything, even our van... All we own fits in our wagon, just like a homeless person we carry all our belongings with us.
By the end of the day, we are proud of ourselves we've made it to where we wanted to stops. That's when things are getting a little more complicated. The area we want to set our tent is surrounded by a fence and a swamp... Plan b in place we setup the tent on a farm road that see to be mostly grass.
We eat our noodles, play cards and try to go to sleep. Well, there is a lot of rocks under our tent making it difficult to lie down... And sleeping at -8 isn't as easy as it seems, let's say that we realised how hard it is for a homeless person to sleep like this every night. We wake up many times because of the cold trying to keep as warm as possible under our sleeping bags, using our little stove to warm up the tent. We finally got a couple of hours of sleep but still we are sore and exhausted.
We get up at 6h30 am to realise that the tent is full of frost and ice on the outside. Our food froze, so is all our shampoo, water etc... we try to change our clothes and pack everything. Our fingers freeze instantly but we have to keep going. Finally, we are ready to go and decide to eat some granola because it's too cold to cook.
This is a rude awakening, homeless people live like this everyday. Not by choice but because they have no warm places to stay. They are in that survival state on a everyday basis preventing them from focusing on anything else like finding a job or even getting services to get housing. Think about this next time you see one and bring them a coffee. A simple gesture that can make their day.
